Wear Mencap is a partnership organisation that works with young people who have learning disabilities in County Durham.
The beginnings of the group were by parents of children and young people who have learning disabilities, who felt there was a need for young people with learning disabilities to be supported in a welcoming community.
Things moved very quickly and in 2012, Wear Mencap was established and it is a key part of the parent group Gateway, and therefore works alongside Sunderland Gateway which works with Young People who have learning disabilities in Sunderland.
Wear Mencap provides activities, services, projects and campaigns that support and encourage young people. Our members have opportunities to try new things, gain qualifications, socialise, and earn money by working with us. We also provide support groups for parents and respite opportunities.
